Old Hickory Lake being the largest in the Nashville area….Is it a river or a lake? BOTH! It’s on the Cumberland River with 440 miles of shoreline. You will find many public boat ramps all around the lake. It’s a TVA dam….with controlled water levels. You can actually get to the Gulf of Mexico from Old Hickory Lake by going through a series of locks over to the Mississippi River.
There are many gorgeous lake homes on Old Hickory Lake. Private docks are permitted in certain areas of the lake. One of the most recent neighborhoods to receive boat dock permits is Fairvue Plantation, in the Gallatin area.
The Old Hickory Lock and Dam, located on the Cumberland River at mile 216.2 in Sumner and Davidson Counties, Tennessee, is approximately 25 miles upstream from Nashville, Tennessee.
The city of Hendersonville is situated on the northern shoreline of the lake and the city of Old Hickory is located on the southern side of the lake, just upstream of the lock and dam. The lake extends 97.3 miles upstream to Cordell Hull Lock and Dam near Carthage, Tennessee. The Nashville area also offers Percy Priest Lake another wounderful lake just south of I-40 about 10-minutes east of the city.

Construction started on Old Hickory Lake in January 1952, and dam closure was completed in June, 1954. The project was completed for full beneficial use in December, 1957 with the placement of the final hydroelectric power unit in operation. The lock, dam, powerhouse and lake are operated and supervised by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' personnel under the direction of the District Engineer at Nashville. The reservoir contains 22,500 surface acres at an elevation of 445 feet (above sea level) and extends 97.3 river miles. Water level fluctuations are minimal with minimum pool elevation at 442 feet. Public facilities include eight marinas, three Corps operated campgrounds, and 41 boat access sites.
Old Hickory Lake has hosted several major national and regional championship bass tournaments over the past few years...including Wal-Mart FLW, Everstart, Bassmaster Megabucks, BASS Tennessee Eastern Invitational, Super Bass Classic National Championship and Bass Pro Shops Crappiemasters National Championship. Hendersonville has a Fishing Rodeo open to children ages 15 and under. A fishing area is netted off and stocked with catfish....with prizes for the winners! It's a lot of fun for the whole family.
You can bring your own boat and use one of the many public boat ramps in the Old Hickory Lake area.......or rent a canoe or pontoon boat. Or you might want to rent jet-skis. It's a great way to explore the secluded coves of the lake, have a fun day on the water.....and perhaps stop to have a picnic. You can reserve a shelter for a family event and some areas even have kitchen facilities. Personal flotation devices are required for persons operating personal watercraft, children under the age of 12, and boaters operating in the tailwaters below the dam.
Hendersonville has children's playground area, tennis courts and picnic shelters on the lake. Feed the ducks and enjoy the day! IT's great fun to find a shady spot to sit and watch people boating and skiing. I always enjoy watching the sailboats. Bank fishing areas (with fish attractors) and accessible fishing piers are located at Rockland, Sanders Ferry, Shutes Branch and Bledsoe Creek State Park.
Old Hickory Lake is home to Black Bass, Largemouth Bass, True Bass, Striped Bass (Rockfish), Sauger and Crappie. The three black bass species (largemouth, smallmouth and spotted) provide the most popular fishery in Old Hickory Lake accounting for 45 percent of fish caught.
Five fish in any species combination may be harvested per person per day. There is a 14 inch minimum size limit for largemouth and smallmouth bass.
True Bass - The true bass fishery is the second most popular in Old Hickory Reservoir accounting for 20 percent of angling effort.
Striped Bass (Rockfish) - 15 inch minimum size limit and creel limit of two striped bass harvested per person per day. A trophy striped bass fishery exists providing an excellent opportunity to catch fish exceeding 30 pounds.
Sauger are another popular sport fishery in Old Hickory Lake accounting for 10 percent of the angling effort. The minimum length limit is 15 inches and daily creel limit is ten per person per day.
Crappie - A fair crappie fishery exists primarily in the warmer embayments and creeks. This fishery accounts for 10 percent of the angling effort. The minimum length limit is 10 inches and daily creel limit is 30 per person.
Just be sure you have the required fishing license, which may be purchased at any County Clerk's Office as well as many commercial establishments. There are several day use fee areas located at Cedar Creek, Laguardo and Old Hickory Beach.
Each area offers swimming, sandy beaches, restrooms, picnic tables, grills and launching ramps. Many areas offer sand volleyball and fishing platforms. It's always enjoying to watch the sailboats. Old Hickory Lake hosts a number of Sail-Boat Regatta's throughout the year.
Old Hickory Lake offers eight commercial marinas that provide a wide variety of services for visitors to the lake. Services such as fuel, long and short-term moorage, fishing and boating supplies, restaurants, groceries and restrooms are all available on Old Hickory Lake.

A trip to the Old Hickory Lake Visitor Center is an excellent way to learn more about the history, navigational facilities, management programs, and recreational facilities of Old Hickory Lake. The visitor center is located in Rockland Recreation Area in Hendersonville. A display, narrated by country music star Ferlin Husky, depicts the history and development of the Cumberland River and Old Hickory Lake.
Another display features memorabilia of the old navigation locks used on the Cumberland before the advent of the modern multipurpose dams. Other interactive exhibits provide information about water safety and Corps natural resources management programs. There are also displays interpreting water resources development in the Cumberland River Basin and the history and mission of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Only a five to ten minute drive west of Gallatin and Hendersonville is the town of Goodlettsville, home to RiverGate Mall the area's largest shopping Mecca on the north side of Nashville with great stores and dining surrounding the mall.
