Old Hickory Information & Real Estate

sailboats_old_hickory_lake_250Old Hickory, Tennessee is a section of metropolitan Nashville, Tennessee named in honor of President Andrew Jackson who was nicknamed "Old Hickory". This area is located in the Hadley Bend section of eastern Davidson County, Tennessee. The area is probably best known for being a former company town as the site of a large DuPont plant. Many of the houses in Old Hickory were built to house Dupont employees and supervisors in the early days of the factory's existence.

Old Hickory is bordered by the Cumberland River on the north and west, Old Hickory Lake to the east, and the city of Lakewood, Tennessee to the south. To the north of the area is also the location of Old Hickory Lock and Dam. The main street through the area is Old Hickory Boulevard (State Route 45).

The area today is the site of a country club, a large golf course, a city park, a Chamber of Commerce, and the Dupont plant, which continues to employ several hundred employees. It is also the home of the Nashville National Weather Service Forecast Office.

The historical heritage found in this area is the Hermitage home of our 7'th President Andrew Jackson and is the most authentic early presidential home in America, where you'll be a honored guest in the Jackson family mansion, the formal garden, slave quarters, and the original log cabin the Jacksons occupied in 1804. Their 1,100-acre plantation was once home to 150 enslaved African Americans who worked the farm, cultivated the gardens, tended livestock, baled cotton, cared for the home and its guests, and met countless other needs of the plantation.

Since 1889, The Hermitage has been run by the Ladies Hermitage Association and is funded only by ticket, sales, donations, and grants. It receives no state or federal money. Andrew Jackson always welcomed visitors to his home. Since The Hermitage opened as a museum in 1889 over 15 million people have crossed its threshold. You are invited to become part of that tradition.
